Sandra Bullock: The Proposal Fashion

Sandra Bullock as Margaret Tate in The Proposal

Sandra Bullock’s latest romantic comedy, The Proposal, earned more than $35 million since its opening on Friday (6/19/2009) making it for Bullock the #1 movie in 10 years, and her best opening ever.

Catherine Marie Thomas, Costume Designer, The ProposalWe were wondering about Sandra Bullock’s wardrobe having a distinct vintage look, and costume designer Cat Thomas, who styled Bullock for the movie, had a perfect explanation for us. Bullock’s character, Margaret Tate,  is a powerful woman — very uptight and strict. Her clothes is her armor — the tighter, the stronger and hardened, the better. There was a need for a structured silhouette, and Bullock’s wardrobe was inspired by the silhouette of the ’40s, as worn by Katherine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell.

“There was nothing that we could pull from a department store,” Thomas recalls. “Designing for Bullock’s character was about building every piece of clothing for this powerful woman who is very confined. Everything was about her power, yet had to be feminine at the same time.”

Bullock’s pencil skirt was purposely made longer so that she would be more nipped in and would have to alter the way she walked.

Celebrities Who Like Maxi Dresses

Nicole RichieMaxi dress trend was one of this summer’s key trends, and we thought we’d give this trend one last look before it’s over. There’s this thing though, while retailers mark down and sell out the maxi dresses, the trend does not show any signs of slowing down.

Photo on the left (click the thumbnail to enlarge) shows Nicole Richie launching her jewelry line at Kitson Boutique in Los Angeles back in March 2009. Nicole is the ultimate ambassador of the maxi dress trend. No other celebrity wore maxi dresses as much as Nicole did. Is this because Nicole seems to always be pregnant or because her jewelry, House of Harlow 1960, fits boho style so well?

OK, let’s see who else, besides Nicole and Angie, fancied maxi dresses this summer.

( 1 )  Jessica Alba  ( 2 )  Jennifer Love Hewitt  ( 3 )  Vanessa Minnillo

Some celebrities, like Brittny Gastineau, Nicole Richie (in Paige denim jacket) and Miranda Kerr (in vintage Levi’s jacket and Ray-Ban wayfarers) took the trend further by covering their maxi dress with  denim jacket (see photos below).

Miley Cyrus Hipster Style

LOS ANGELES, CA — Singer Miley Cyrus was running errands yesterday. We eyed her in a grey cardigan vest, white tank and blue jeans that she accessorized with some Dogeared jewelry (black peace charm bracelet), Minnetonka fringe moccasin boots ($100 at Net-A-Porter or $79.99 at Urban Outfitters) and white Louis Vuitton Mahina bag ($2740).

Rihanna’s Vacation Style

We got curious about things Rihanna wears when she goes to vacation spots like Hawaii or her native Barbados. We are talking about street clothes — not beachwear.  Young, Black & Fabulous has really great Rihanna photo coverage, and we’ve linked to several photos of theirs. Check the story inside:

Kiely Williams Courtside Style

NEW YORK — Singer Kiely Williams of The Cheetah Girls visited Madison Square Garden the other day and enjoyed a basketball game. In the meanwhile, we enjoyed her style.

Kiely combined a black leather jacket, a floral print minidress with black leggings and burgundy Christian Louboutin heels. Kiely’s purple Louis Vuitton Speedy bag was ‘parked’ right before her.

Copycat Bebe!

NEW YORK — These shots lifted from June/July 2008 issue of Interview Magazine picture American fashion designer and Louis Vuitton’s creative director Marc Jacobs. Among other LV things, Jacobs is seen wearing in these pictures Louis Vuitton wedge shoes in purple and in black.

Now, take a look at the photos below (click to enlarge).  Do they look familiar? Whoa, popular retailer Bebe has created France platform shoes which happen to look exaclty like LVs worn by Jacobs. Bebe shoes in purple retail for $169, and black wedges sell for $179.

We should accuse ourselves for using these photos without permission. But how would we otherwise illustrate the point?

Madonna’s LV Tango

NEW YORK — It looked a bit strange back in November 2008 when entertainer Madonna donned this feathery Louis Vuitton runway look from Spring 2009 Collection to a Gucci-sponsored charity event. Now, things make a lot more sense! WWD reports that LV’s creative director, Marc Jacobs, has recruited Madonna to star in Louis Vuitton spring ad campaign which will appear in fashion magazines in February 2009. The campaign, which reportedly made Madonna $10 million, consists of six photos and was shot by Steven Meisel. Click here to read the article.

MG Likes LV!

This lovely poster above comes from Louis Vuitton campaign and features former Soviet leader Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev.

In case you didn’t know, LV happens to be one of the most counterfeited brands in the world! According to Wikipedia Encyclopedia only about 1% of all bags bearing the Louis Vuitton monogram are authentic. So, what’s the point of paying premium price for a bag if it’s the only real thing among 99 identical fake ones?

We like President Gorbachev’s LV bag, but we are only paying $99 for it!

Blake Lively & Penn Badgley Red Carpet Style

NEW YORK — “Gossip Girl” actors Blake Lively and Penn Badgley attended US Weekly Magazine’s 2008 Hot Hollywood List party last week.

Blake is said to be the next Julia Roberts. We, however, think it would be incorrect to compare these two actors as they have utterly different personalty types.

Blake Lively pulled a striped shirt out of her mother’s closet and mixed it with a black Inhabit vest, Rich & Skinny jeans, Jeri Cohen bangles, Van Cleef & Arpels necklace and Louis Vuitton booties.

Dressed in a grey H&M shirt and black Marc Jacobs skinny jeans, Penn Badgley said about fame that came to him as the result of his role in GG – “it’s a lot of fun.” Yeah, it’s difficult to imagine now that the world didn’t even know of Penn’s existence two years ago. GG rocks!
