NEW YORK — What’s up with Rihanna’s cleavage? Well, that’s a rhetorical question. We bumped into the 21-year-old singer in the Big Apple on Tuesday (6/30/2009) having dinner at Philippe Restaurant. She looked casual, nice and happy. Rihanna wore Helmut Lang Spring 2009 shirt, Current/Elliott Roll Up Short in High Low Wash ($185 via Chick Downtown) and carried a $755 Alexander Wang Denim Leather Brenda Zip Bag. FYI: Steve Madden has very similar bag in white. There are white shoes similar to Rihanna’s: Geox D Cyndi 07 Shoes ($104.50 via Zappos).

Los Angeles, CA — Drew Barrymore was spotted at the Staples Center Tuesday night with her friend and business associate Chris Miller who is VP of Drew’s production company Fowler Films. They attended LA Lakers vs Denver Nuggets basketball game.

Drew wore a Tucker One Courtyard Fete blouse, Helmut Lang Boyfriend pants ($203, was $290 at Bloomingdale’s) and accessorized with Gucci Iman Ankle Strap sandals (sold out, was $1275 at Saks 5th Ave) and a bold Erickson Beamon Boudica stone necklace (sold out, was $865 at Net-A-Porter).

This season reveals more and more celebrities sporting Arabic-style trousers also known as hareem pants (harem pants). On the one hand, harem pants look so edgy and chic, on the other, they can be hideous especially when matched with wrong body type. Such a controversy made us think how much celebrity power does this trend need to take off? Would it be enough to see these stars wear harem pants: Anne Hathaway, Mary-Kate Olsen, Lindsay Lohan, Jennifer Lopez, Gwen Stefani, Katie Holmes, Rachel Bilson, Naomi Campbell, Renee Zellweger and Diane Kruger?

The trend is as old as this world. We can thank French designer Paul Poiret for introducing harem pants to Western fashion in the 1920s. Since then, the garment, which is influenced by Middle Eastern Orientalism, has been a part of hundreds of collections. 

In the 1970s the trend was popularized by designer Bob Mackie and Cher. Then, there was Madonna and MC Hammer.   In the 1990s harem pants were at height of popularity and were widely incorporated in the pret-a-porter and haute couture collections of Western designers, such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, Dries van Noten, John Galliano and Alexander McQueen.

The fashion industry is trying to bring harem pants back big time this year. Spring and fall 2009 runways  were loaded with models sporting the trend. Fashion retailers are stocked up and open for business (check the links below):
