LOS ANGELES, CA — Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were hanging out together last Tuesday (10/27/2009). What did they wear in common? They wore trendy patterned tights. Otherwise their style couldn’t have been more different. While Taylor opted for a classic trench coat and patent leather Christian Louboutin pumps, Selena chose motorcycle jacket and studded Free People Watson Boots [sold out, was $1305.38]. Selena Gomez also wore Kimchi Blue Zip Pleat Ruffle Dress ($58 via Urban Outfitters).
If people can wear their fur lined boots (like UGGs) with denim shorts in summer heat, they can certainly style their shorts to be practical in freezing cold. And so it’s happening right now in NYC!
We see fashionistas here and there wearing their tiny distressed denim shorts over thick hosiery or leggings to brace for cold weather. The look is edgy, cool and layered, albeit it is not entirely universal and not so easy to pull off.
Naturally, there are plenty of celebrity examples. Jennifer Aniston posed for photographer Alexei Hay for September 2009 issue of Elle Magazine. She wore What Goes Around Comes Around (WGACA) Vintage Denim Shorts [sold out, was $95] over dark hosiery.
Katie Holmes experimented with the trend early enough. We first spotted Katie wearing PRPS Ladies Cuffed shorts [sold out, was $326] in Los Angeles in April 2009. Later, in May 2009, Katie layered her PRPS shorts with black cropped leggings.
Kate Moss, who is one of the biggest fans of shorts, won’t give up wearing her favorite garment in cold weather.

Tights are always big part of fall fashion. This fall, there’s an emerging trend that captures hearts and minds of more and more women. We see all over Manhattan young, professional women go beyond basic monochrome hosiery and opt out for flashy tights and stockings.
Colored, patterned and otherwise embellished hosiery were all over Fall 2009 runways. Naturally, there are plenty of celebrities who adopted the trend. This is quite an inexpensive accessory that instantly transforms any outfit creating bolder, edgier style. Patterned tights and stockings are versatile and can be worn with pencil skirts, shorter mini skirts, shorts and even boyfriend blazers (!).

Military style jackets with frogging embroidery, which were the staple of Michael Jackson’s concert wardrobe and were commonly used as officer’s uniform in many armies around 18th century through early 20th century, became one of the hottest trends in 2009.
The style was brought back by Christophe Decarnin for Balmain Spring 2009 Collection and re-interpreted by many other designers for Spring and Fall 2009. The trend was further fueled by Michael Jackson untimely passing away, which created real demand for military style he loved so much.
